The image above is an example of a post I created for Stony Creek Brewery in Branford, CT, where I work as their Marketing & Social Media Coordinator.
Working in social media marketing, my daily life involves planning, generating, editing, and posting content across platforms. These tasks contribute to the wider idea of content strategy, as each piece of content is tailored to fit the needs of both the users and the business I work for.
While I do not necessarily consider myself a content strategist, the way in which I work with digital content certainly relates to content strategy as a concept. In my role, I’m tasked with creating daily or weekly posts across social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and Twitter. This involves a great amount of planning, organizing, and staying on time, while also gathering and managing enough content for daily usage.
Content Tactics
Organizing Ideas:
I use various tactics in order to organize my ideas, posts, and content. All of the content I generate begins with ideas, which I keep a running list of each week. This is the creative side of this role that I enjoy the most. I usually find inspiration from trends that emerge on social media, which are ever-changing from day to day.
Organizing Posts:
In order to stay on top of all the posts going up each day, I use a project management software called ClickUp. This allows me to create spaces for each platform, create tasks within those spaces, add due dates, and track the progress of each. I also use this to track the progress of miscellaneous tasks as well, such as a promotional video I was responsible for that I’ll soon post on the website.
Organizing Content:
Organizing content has been the most challenging for me. I capture most of my content on my camera, and typically, it tends to sit in my SD card until I need to use it. I have used my external hard drive as well as a shared Google Drive to create folders for content, but daily content has proven difficult to generate a solid organizational structure for – as it builds so quickly.
For this reason, I would consider myself a bit of a content hoarder. However, hanging on to content has been helpful in times of need. Images and videos from events that took place weeks or months ago can come in handy if a post is due and there isn’t new content for it.
Working in social media marketing, or any position that involves content creation, is the never ending quest for something new to say to your audience each and every day. Content strategy plays a massive role in this quest. As I grow into the evolving world of social media marketing, I hope to develop my skills in content strategy and organization.
